Rossington’s reserves concede agonisingly late at the theatre of Doncaster football to fall narrowly short of the Blake Cairns Foundation in the Premier Division K.O. Cup final.
Jason Stokes gave Rossington Main their dream start as his cruising long range effort glided into the top left corner to draw first blood.
However, the Blake Cairns Foundation didn’t panic and looked towards their captain Dave Whiteley who levelled proceedings five minutes later. The Blake Cairns overturned Rossington’s early lead on the 40 minute when Evans racked up the game’s third at the back post.
Shaun Pembleton evened proceedings in the second half after nodding away on the edge of the penalty box. Chris Earl then crushed Rossington hearts after capitalising on a spilled save in the dying minutes of normal time.
Main began with a bang at one of the cathedrals of Doncaster football. Stokes struck gold inside the fourth minute with a long-range effort which glided into the top left corner to break the deadlock.
Rossington’s early lead was short-lived as the Blake Cairns Foundation responded swiftly via their captain Whiteley who with help from the inside of the bar, his shot managed to only just cross the line at the back post.
The Blake Cairns Foundation almost overturned Rossington’s early lead with a couple of close-cut chances. The initial opportunity denied the Cairns by the bar and the other veered narrowly wide of the left post and letting Main’s reserve team off the hook.
Prior to another close call whereby the crossbar saved Main again after a terrific long-range strike. Josh Yeaman looked to have put Rossington’s reserves back in front on the 36 minute, only for his strike across goal to roll narrowly wide of the bottom right corner.
Main’s reserve team fell behind five minutes before the interval as an unfortunate event which saw Daniel Lodge slip as the Blake Cairns Foundation played a ball across goal which concluded in Evans smacking the ball into an empty net.
Rossington had to wait until eight minutes after the hour mark struck until they returned the favour of putting the game back on level terms. Pendleton headed the ball home after a spilled ball led to a pumping ball back across goal to a man in blue.
Everyone in the Eco-Power Stadium climbed out of their seat thinking that Jordan Whittle had put Rossington ahead after a fiery ball was sent towards him at the back post, but his sliding effort narrowly missed the target wide.
Just as the game looked to have to been heading straight to penalties, Earl capitalised on a spilled save from a corner kick to crush Rossington’s cup dreams. With only a couple of minutes awarded for time lost, the referee’s whistle soon came and went seeing Main’s reserves fall at the final hurdle.
