Rossington Main will be hoping it’s more treat than trick as they head to Cannon Park to face Retford United for Saturday’s Halloween clash.
Ben Hunter and Greg Young’s side will be looking to round off a perfect week by delivering three wins in seven days after casting aside high-flyers Bottesford Town last weekend and progressing to the Quarter Final of the Senior Cup with midweek victory over Dinnington Town.
The win against Bottesford Town kept Rossington in the play-off picture and set up an enticing fixture with our hosts who currently occupy the final play-off spot with a five-point lead over Main.
Main may have to head into the first of three consecutive away trips without club captain and joint top scorer Reece Fielding. The central defender withdrew from Tuesday night’s cup win only 15 minutes after being on the receiving end of a high challenge that would see Rosso awarded a penalty.
At the other end of the pitch, Main have stepped up their attacking output, averaging two goals per game across their six October fixtures. This potency in front of goal has coincided with the arrival of Rob Guilfoyle from Hallam, who has found the back of the net four times from five league appearances.
The latest addition to the Rosso 100 club, Oli Nowak, has also found his shooting boots this month, grabbing three from six, including his spectacular brace in the impressive 4-0 dismantling of run-away leaders Dearne & District.
The Badgers have taken to life in the NCEL Premier Division like a duck to water following back-to-back promotions under the stewardship of Ryan Hindley, picking up 26 points from their opening 16.
United’s strong beginnings won’t deter Main, however, having only dropped six points against the league’s current crop of top-half teams, securing 12 points with only Retford FC, Barton Town and Saturday’s opposition yet to come.
Retford United have endured a mixed bag of results recently, with the popular Hindley departing for Ilkeston Town at the start of the month and his assistant Jas Colliver making the step up to the managerial role, overseeing cup defeats against Northwich Victoria and Bottesford in his opening two.
Colliver picked up his first win at the weekend against the out-of-form Worsbrough Bridge when United held on for a 3-2 win with three second-half strikes at Park Road Stadium.
Still, Retford United will prove to be stern opposition, having only lost once in 11 league matches, a run built on the foundations of the fifth-best defensive record in the division, having conceded just 19 times thus far.
This will be the first time the sides have met since the 2017/18 season, when both were plying their trade in the NCEL Division One.
The away leg saw The Badgers come up trumps with a slender 1-0 scoreline. The reverse and most recent fixture brought better luck for Rosso who secured a 2-0 victory courtesy of goals from Lee Holmes and Andrew Walkden.
