Rossington will be determined to avenge their 1-0 season opening defeat to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic when they visit Park Road Stadium for some Friday Night Football.
Rosso’s troubling start to the season, where the side lost three of the first four in all competitions, now seems a distant memory as Main have only slipped to three further defeats since.
As we fast approach the half-way point of the season, the Worsbrough dressing room will also be taking stock of a campaign that has been a tale of two halves thus far with the newly promoted Briggers sitting second in September before dropping to 15th ahead of Friday’s meeting.
Rossington claimed a strong point on the road in their first fixture with Retford United since 2018 as Ollie Currie capped off an excellent month of goalscoring by drilling home a superb finish on the spin in the first half. However, his effort was cancelled out as United produced a battling performance in the second period that saw them take a share of the spoils.
October was a bit of a rollercoaster for Rosso, beginning with the thrill of putting four past the team at the summit of the NCEL Premier Division table without response. What followed was a disappointing run of three losses, culminating in Main holding five at Frickley Athletic.
The team held strong, however, beating another of the league’s promotion hopefuls in Bottesford Town and progressing to the quarter-final of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup.
Unfortunately, this has seen Main fall off the play-off pace slightly, now six points outside the top five, having only been four points adrift at the end of September. Nonetheless, there is still cause for optimism inside the Main camp with Ben Hunter and Greg Young’s side having at least one game in hand on the teams separating them from fifth.
November also brings with it five games against opposition currently sitting below Rosso, representing a good opportunity to push up the league.
The Barnsley-based team looked virtually unstoppable in their first six, firing in 17 and taking 16 points, which would have them hot on the heels of Bottesford in first.
Since then, Friday’s hosts have only added an additional four points to their name, losing all but two games in the league, including Tuesday night’s 5-1 away thumping at the hands of Knaresborough Town.
Notably, their autumn slumber has coincided with the departure of manager Lee Morris to Frickley in late September.
Morris, who led Bridge out of Division One after spending 40 years at the level, was replaced by another club legend in the shape of Conor Glavin, who has racked up more than 200 appearances at the club prior to becoming player-manager.
As is reflected in their results, Glavin has been dealt a rough hand in his introduction to management with the mass exodus of key players such as talisman Keelan Grist and Lewis O’Connor to Frickley amongst other notable losses.
Glavin has also had to navigate a change at boardroom level with long-serving chairman Mark Booth overseeing his last game at the weekend as he passes the torch to ex-players Darryl Jones and Luke Forgione.
July’s clash saw Bridge stake their first-ever win in the Premier Division in a gritty match-up where Grist just edged Worsbrough in front after 63 minutes and Morris’ team went on to dig in and hold onto maximum points.
With the key architects of their opening-day win now missing, though, Friday promises to be a very different proposition to the one Rosso faced in July.
