Rossington Main added another date to their diary with a 2-1 victory in Round Three of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup over Step 7 side Dinnington Town.
After seeing off Denaby Main in Round Two, Ben Hunter and Greg Young’s side sealed their progression to the quarter-finals of the competition for the second time in consecutive campaigns.
First-half goals from both Olivers, Nowak and Currie, were enough to set up a tie in the last eight, despite a competitive display from the visitors, who fought back with Gabe Oloko’s strike, but ultimately came up just short.
It didn’t take long for the game to kick into life with Town striking the post within the first five minutes.
Minutes later, the hosts would also hit the woodwork with Mason Warren’s deep free-kick dumbfounding everyone inside the box and bouncing onto the bar. Dinnington failed to clear their lines, however, allowing Currie to fire a goal-bound shot, which was to be blocked by Town’s number three.
Skipper Reece Fielding was Johnny-on-the-spot to follow up but was the victim of a strong and high challenge that saw referee Jake Rhodes point to the spot and may on another day have provoked an early dismissal.
With Fielding receiving treatment for the challenge which would prematurely curtail his participation in the game, Nowak had plenty of time to pick his spot, which he did with aplomb, neatly passing into the bottom left corner, with the keeper’ guessing the wrong way.
Chances continued to fall the way of Rosso, with Oscar Wainwright attempting the spectacular with an ambitious 30-yard half-volley almost paying off, with the right-back’s effort just at a nice height for the goalkeeper to push away.
Rossington eventually doubled their advantage in the 43rd minute with Warren’s set-pieces causing havoc once more. This time a pinpoint out-swinging corner would be met by the high rising Currie, who would see his initial attempt blocked by Mohssen Mohamed with the attacker inadvertently re-centring for Currie to fling his right boot towards the ball and guide home.
Rosso were not content with just the two goals, however, and sought about adding to their lead in the second half. Harry Wilson had the best opportunity to put the game to bed, when he saw his looping effort land just the wrong side of the post by mere margins after going clean through.
Mohamed thought he had bagged the third when he rounded the keeper’ but the linesman deemed he had gone too early.
The Yellows weren’t to let the game pass them by and after withstanding a wave of attacks the Camper UK Premier Division North outfit would claw a goal back when Kian Johnson was unable to get a strong enough glove to push Gary Heath’s header round the post and Oloko was on hand to prod home from close range.
A late rally would have Main sweating over their lead as Dinno came close on a number of occasions to restoring parity, but still it was the home side that had the strongest claim to a fourth goal of the encounter with Mohamed again taking the keeper’ out the equation, this time seeing his path to goal blocked and Wilson unable to make the most of an open goal with a shot that was always rising.
Nonetheless, Main averted the threat of penalties and put themselves in the hat for the next round, with attentions now turning to the league trip to Retford United as they look to make it three wins in the space of seven days.
