Biography

The technically gifted, clever and creative midfielder received a scholarship in America where he was later drafted by Columbus Crew in the fourth round of the 2007 MLS SuperDraft. With further experience in the States including winning the USL Second Division in 2009 with Richmond Kickers, on returning to England, Ben signed for Matlock and then North Ferriby where he had made various appearances at the top level of English Non-League football. On returning to his boyhood village, Ben would take charge of the club as manager in 2019 where in a five year spell as gaffer, he would take Doncaster's highest ranked Non-League side to new heights. He managed Rosso to a Northern Counties East League Division One play-off semi-final against North Ferriby F.C. in 2022 and achieved the club's first-ever promotion to Non-League step 5 the following year after a historic play-off final victory over Horbury Town in 2023 in front of 1,164 fans at Oxford Street. In the club's debut season at Non-League step 5, the team narrowly missed out on another play-off final after a tense penalty shootout in the NCEL Premier semi-final away at Garforth Town. Ben also helped the club reach two domestic cup semi-finals and also ended an 11-year wait in returning Rosso back into the oldest national football competition, the Emirates FA Cup. Since stepping down as manager in September 2024 and while never officially calling time on his playing career, Hunter remains registered and eligible to play for the development side while also registered as a Club Thorne Colliery player in the NCEL Division One.
