Biography

The tall, experienced and powerful veteran defender has played in all of the top nine levels excluding the Premier League in the overall English Football League pyramid. In a career spanning over 20+ years, with many years as a full-time professional, Young has played in the the EFL Championship, EFL League One, EFL League Two, National League, National League North, Northern Premier League, NPL East, Northern Counties East League Premier and NCEL Division One. Following a stint as player-coach for Grantham, Young made the move to Rosso ahead of the 2021/22 NCEL Division One campaign. Under at the time manager Ben Hunter, Young made an enormous difference to strengthen Rosso's defence. After a total of 45 appearances including six-goals in all competitions that season, Young helped Rosso reach the end-of-season play-offs where they was unfortunately defeated 2-0 away at North Ferriby F.C. Prior to the defeat, Young also helped Rosso reach the last four of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup where Rossington were narrowly defeat 1-2 at home to Worksop Town in the semi-final. Following the departure of Bailey Conway who moved higher up the Non-League ladder, after an impressive first season at Oxford Street, Young would take the captain's armband for the 2022/23 season of which he captained Rosso to promotion to Non-League step 5 for the first time in the club's history as a further five goals and 42 appearances in all competitions heroically helped Rosso to lift the NCEL Division One play-off final trophy following a 3-1 victory over Horbury Town in the final. Following the monumental moment in the club's history, Young committed to Rossington's debut season in the NCEL Premier for 2023/24. A further 43 appearances and a hugely important seven goals in all competitions followed however, following an injury in the second to last game of the regular season away in a 0-0 draw at Tadcaster Albion. This would rule the captain out for the play-offs and also NCEL JCP Construction Cup semi-final. Back-to-back promotions wasn't to be as Rosso were defeated on penalties away at Garforth Town in the play-off semi-final and also lost 1-2 at home to Emley in the domestic cup last four. Following the injury picked up at the end of the previous season, questions circulated whether Young would come back for another season or call time on his playing career however, much to the delight of everyone at the club, Young chose to continuing playing and has currently made over 130+ appearances for Doncaster's highest ranked Non-League side. While not having fully recovered from injury and despite one appearance since recovering from his injury, in mid-September 2024, Young had the call to be interim manager following Hunter stepping down as first-team Rossington Main manager. Young delivered three wins out of five while in temporary charge of which saw him secure the role on a permanent basis in October. Since being appointed as the permanent boss, Young hasn't officially called time on his playing career as he still intends to turn out occasionally but will concentrate more on his role in the dugout.
